Meet Dan Wheals: The Journal of Wild Culture’s uncontainable, sustainable fanatic. In the rural lands of Suffolk, southern England, Dano and his local community have been busying themselves with creating a small town utopia: creating and adopting new green fingered strategies in order to build a town that is self contained and self preserving.

In this first episode Dano and his Bungay consort organise and build a pig co-op in Dano’s back yard.

I appreciate your hard work and it looks lovely there. I hope someday you will realize that slaughter has no place in a self described utopia. Plant some vegetables. Those pigs are probably smarter than your dogs. You don't NEED to eat them so don't. Are you going to let the kids in the video watch the slaughter? If you wouldn't allow that then you might already know it is wrong.

You have a great opportunity here for education. Don't be fooled by tall grass and fresh water for the pigs. That's how it is supposed to be. It's not a favor.

I was going to say that since the filming we got three pigs and 4 months on they are ready to be sent to the abattoir. Learnt lots. Previous comment is fair enough, but for those that eat meat, possibly without thought, this way of DIY prodcution has been a real eye opener for us all. Plus we couldn't grow veg as we needed the pigs to clear it of those sedge plants, broke several tools trying. Now it is ready for veg growing. We are also part of a project looking at local food production and we are also trailing beans for a protein source. Eating ethically ain't easy.

I'm very glad to hear that the pigs are not dead yet. You might need some help accepting that meat protein is the worst of all. Surely you must have a local market until your crops come in. I thought you might want to read this about protein sources if it helps at all. http://michaelbluejay.com/veg/protein.html. Best of luck to you. I can tell you that you will never feel better than when you have a clear conscience, knowing that you didn't pay to have someone else take a life for you, especially when it is by choice, not necessity. If you can cut their throats yourself, then I'll believe you're okay with it all. Teach your children compassion to all, not just the ones that are allowed in plain view. That's why slaughtering is kept hidden. No one wants to accept responsibility for the violence that they inflict.
