Decades ago, I saw a movie in which one of the central characters was a photographer. This fictional character was shown to have created, at least to my eyes, a wonderful series of black and white images — their common denominator being the absence of people, where clearly, people could have existed. At some point in the movie, a fictional psychologist attempted to use these images to profile the photographer as lonely, introverted, afraid of social interaction, and perhaps, a misanthrope. All I saw, was a series of images that eloquently spoke in the little understood and largely forsaken language of quiet. The photos in that mostly unremarkable movie have informed most of what I pursue in my photography these days.
